“I’m not sure I’ve heard much of Genesis’s music before,” Scarlett stated as they walked along the street, away from Graham and Lorraine’s house. “I don’t think I’d recognise any. Who’s in the band?”

“Have you heard of Phil Collins?” Rob asked.

“Oh, yeah. I think I’ve heard him on the radio. Isn’t there that one that goes, du-dun, du-dun, du-dun, du-dun, dun, dun.” She mimed playing the drums as she made the staccato sound.

“It’s called ‘In The Air Tonight’, and yeah, that’s a very famous drum solo.”

“Cadburys used it, didn’t they? With that gorilla.”

“Aye, that they did,” Rob confirmed. “He wrote the song after splitting from his wife, I think. I’ll have to play you some of their tracks. I’ll turn you into a fan, don’t you worry.”

“Can’t wait.”

They walked along the road until they reached a junction with a side road leading off to their left. It was short and came to a dead-end, where it transformed into a path running out across overgrown wasteland. It was only metres away from the picturesque little cul-de-sac that Lorraine lived on, but it seemed worlds away from that almost picture-postcard street. There was a run-down-looking car garage on the corner, with several vehicles looking worse for wear parked on the side road. Including one that was up on bricks, and another hidden beneath a tarp, lashed into place with ropes. The road was bordered on the left by a fence of hedgerows, while the right deteriorated into derelict buildings covered in graffiti. Towards the end, a seemingly abandoned food truck stood to one side, its wheels overgrown with weeds. Just beyond that, massive blocks of concrete blocked any vehicles hoping to reach the path and wasteland beyond.

As they watched, a pedestrian walked out of the fenced-off path over the brown site, and nodded hello as he walked up the street. It seemed to be in regular use.

“Nailer said the phone was last picked up around here,” Rob said as they reached the enormous chunks of concrete at the end of the sideroad. “Have a look around and see if you can see anything.”

Finding a long stick, Rob picked it up and used it to pick through the litter that was scattered everywhere. Ripped black bin liners spilt their contents. Food and drinks wrappers, cartons or containers lay discarded, the leftovers they once contained long since scavenged by the local wildlife.

The area needed a damn good clean up.

“What are you hoping to find?” Scarlett asked as they scanned the area.
